The Mayo Region
Stretching from Lough Corrib in the south to Killala Bay in the north, Mayo boasts many attractions including stunning mounting scenery, megalithic tombs, excellent fishing waters, exciting hiking trails and great golf courses - including the championship course at Westport in west Mayo.
Westport is a charming town, with lively traditional pubs and plenty of Irish music. It lies at the mouth of Clew Bay, where you'll find Achill Island - the largest island off the Irish coast, and probably the most beautiful, with lovely mountains, moors and beaches. Why not take an island hopping holiday?
Back on the mainland, Croagh Patrick , the pyramidal mountain, is where Saint Patrick is said to have performed his snake-banishing act. Mayo's other famous religious site is Knock, which is visited by hordes of pilgrims every year. The people of Mayo are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness.
Carracastle is located just inside the County Mayo border and is very convenient for touring the west of Ireland
Carracastle has at least 20 Pre-historic Forts in the area. Stone and Earthen Forts are noted in a book on Carracastle published by local historian Vincent Coleman.
On Lough Gara there are Crannogs dotted along the Lough - these are man-made stone islands built over 3,000 years ago.
The Céide Fields of Mayo have exposed 2,000 acres of stone walled fields built over hills and valleys with a unique interpretative centre.
