The Cork Region

Dunboy Castle ~ once castle home of the famous O’Sullivan-Bere family, who led the great march North to Leitrim in 1602. A separate large ruin was the home of the Puxleys, the owners of the Allihies Copper mine.

Eyeries Village ~ this village has beautifully painted houses and flower displays on nearly every window. Parts of the television series 'Falling For a Dancer' were shot here in 1997.

Ardgroom ~ close to Glenbeg & Derryvegal lakes, both of which provide good trout fishing. Nearby is a stone circle, one of the many archaeological sites on the peninsula.

Adrigole ~ reputedly one of the longest villages in the country offers:

An award winning craft shop and the highest waterfall in Ireland (located around the base of Hungry Hill).
The Healy Pass, which takes a scenic mountain route linking the North and the South of the peninsula.
Castletownbere – The peninsula’s main town (pop. 1500) and the largest white fish port in Ireland. Watch the fish being unloaded from the boats and transported off around the world. Mooring for yachts in the harbour and great sheltered sailing in the ‘haven’ of Bere Island. Two supermarkets, garages, coffee shops, restaurants, clothes shops, hardware and ships chandlers.

Allihies Area

Allihies is located at the tip of the Beara Peninsula, West Cork, in an area of unspoilt beauty. The isolation and the wildness of the Atlantic landscape, the seclusion of this edge of the world atmosphere are all conducive to relaxation and creativity. The village, though small, (one general store, a post office, four lively pubs - often with music) is nevertheless animated and has an active welcoming community.

There are many activities available within a close distance to the homes. Some of the most popular ones include:

Shore Angling - numerous fishing spots are sign-posted on the Beara coastline.

Sea Angling - deep sea boat or shore fishing is available in Kenmare River or Bantry Bay and in many well marked sites along the coast.

Walking - the well mapped Beara Way walking route passes near Beara Holiday Homes.

Horse-Riding - local equestrian centre located in Castletownbere.

Cycling - the Beara cycling route is well marked and bicycles are available for Hire in Allihies and Castletownbere.

Dinghy sailing - boat hire and tuition at West Cork Sailing Centre.

Meditation Dzogchen Beara retreat centre – run by RIGPA, a worldwide Tibetan Buddhist organisation. Dzogchen Beara offers retreats under the guidance of Sogyal Ripoche, author of the best selling book, “The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying”. People come from all over the world to attend the centre. There are often classes available and daily meditations are open to anyone.

Genealogy - many people come to the area to trace friends and relatives and track down ancestors. The very helpful genealogist, Riobard O’Dwyer, author of “Who were my Ancestors” is often able to help. His research is considered one of the most detailed in the whole of Ireland.
